Making Space: Found Music & Found Sound Bath
This workshop is offered as a part of our Making Space Artist-in-Residence program
Service Description
Learn to hear music in the world around you with our artist-in-residence, Rootmouth! In this two-day program, participants begin with a short introduction to found sound as a tradition in music and then spend the rest of the first session collecting their own sounds. Using only a phone, each participant records loops between 15 seconds and one minute long of sounds that can work as drums or percussion, bass, keys or strings and a voice. The voice can be a human voice or anything that speaks to voice for you. Everyone then chooses a favorite, shares it with the group and says why they chose it to be that instrument. Afterward, participants send all of their sounds to Rootmouth. On day two, participants settle into a dimly lit, candlelit room and listen to a 45-minute sound bath that Rootmouth builds from every sound the group collected. This beginner-friendly workshop is open to participants ages 12 and up. Please bring a phone to Found Music on November 7 and something comfortable to sit or lie on to Found Sound Bath on November 8. Participants under 18 will need a guardian’s permission for their recordings to be used in the sound bath.
