Service Description

You've got some sewing basics down, now what's next? Join us for a hands-on, four-part beginner-intermediate sewing mini-course where you will get to design and make a custom-fit smock dress. Improve your sewing skills, learn pattern drafting skills so you can make clothes that fit you perfectly! Class 1: Drafting Basics In the first session, you'll get further into the foundations of pattern drafting. Learn how to take measurements and draft a pattern for a smock dress. This pattern has a few parts including a loose fitting "bodice block" and sleeves. (This means you can use this pattern to make simple shirts as well!) Class 2: Sew a Prototype (aka a "muslin") + Fabric Overview In this session, you'll use your pattern to sew a muslin cotton prototype of your smock dress. You can use this to test out to fit of the pattern and make any adjustments before sewing your final piece. We'll also go over fabrics as you will need to purchase fabric for your final dress! Class 3: Pattern Adjustments and Sewing your final piece In this session you will learn how to take the adjustments made to your muslin and apply them to your pattern. Then you will start cutting and sewing your final piece! Class 4: In the final session, you'll complete the assembly of your top or smock dress. We’ll cover finishing techniques, hemming, and troubleshooting common sewing challenges. By the end of this class, you'll walk away with new sewing skills and a completed custom top or dress. Each session is 3 hours long. Participants can also have free drop-in access to the sewing machines for the duration of the course if they need extra time between classes! Come learn, create, and have fun! Participants must know how to use a sewing machine for this course.
